Dr. Tetiana Sukach, LMFT

Hello and welcome!

I am Dr. Tetiana Sukach. I graduated from University of Louisiana at Monroe with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. I also earned a Doctorate degree in Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy from Texas Tech University. While in my doctoral program, I completed additional specialized training that focused on clinical treatment of individuals and families with eating disorders, substance use disorders, and addictive disorders and behaviors.

I have provided therapy to diverse populations and worked in various clinical settings including residential treatment center for eating disorders, family development center, shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, outpatient counseling center, and inpatient psychiatric hospital unit.

As a former athlete myself, I recognize the importance of mental health support and the unique pressures associated with sports performance. I provide therapy to athletes, helping them navigate diverse mental health challenges, struggles with sense of identity, and sport performance demands.

I also specialize in helping clients with eating disorders, disordered eating, body image concerns, challenging relationships with food, and past trauma. I adhere to Health at Every Size (HAES) principles  and advocate for body shape and size inclusivity. I am especially passionate about working with couples and families of those who are struggling with eating disorders. Through my clinical work, I have witnessed the importance of connection and support for successful recovery and the value that it can bring to the recovery process.

Additionally, I work with individuals, couples, and families struggling with a variety of other issues such as trauma, grief and loss, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, women’s issues, life transitions, parenting, infidelity, sexual abuse, conflict, and relationship issues.

As a trained systemic therapist, I place great value on understanding each of my clients in the context of their life experiences and the complexity of social relationships. I assist my clients in identifying patterns that contribute to experienced issues and we collaboratively explore paths for change. I believe that trust and safety are essential in therapeutic relationships and approach my clients with compassion and curiosity.

I am dedicated to social justice and proactively seek opportunities to deepen my knowledge to advocate for and better serve my community. I am passionate about challenging negative social messages about women’s bodies and wellness as well as destigmatizing mental health.

My Therapy Approach & Values

I am trained as a systemic therapist, which forms my perspective and my approach to therapy. But what is Systemic Therapy?

Systemic Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that has a contextually-focused outlook at its core, meaning that an individual is best understood within the contexts of their relationships and systems they are a part of (for example, family, culture, organization, community, class, race, etc.). The primary focus is on the way an individual relates to others and patterns of communication that exist within their relationships. Problems that an individual experiences are not viewed as something “wrong” with the individual themself, but rather problems are grounded in and maintained by the dynamics of their relationships and existing patterns of the systems they belong to. Within Systemic Therapy, change on an individual level creates a ripple effect in the system and requires it to adapt in response. Thus, Systemic Therapy accounts for the uniqueness of each individual’s worldview, experiences, and relationships.

Self-Reflection & Awareness

Developing skills of self-reflection and becoming more self-aware in therapy will allow you to be more connected with your experiences in the present moment. This can help you feel more comfortable with a range of emotions and feel more compassionate towards yourself.

Growth

Therapy is a great opportunity for growth. As your therapist, I will support and challenge you to step outside of established patterns.

Connection

I believe that connection is vital in our lives, connection in all its forms: connection to yourself, connection to others, connection to your culture, etc. Therapy is the space for you to connect to your authentic self and learn how to carry that into your other relationships in life.

Vulnerability

Creating a safe and comfortable environment for you where you can allow yourself to be vulnerable, where you don’t have to “edit” what you say and how you feel is one of my priorities in therapy.
